BIOGRAPHY

Self-taught professional painter since 2008, Yann FREDERICQUE has been exploring the material for 25 years. He first patiently dug his furrow in the footsteps of the great masters of Abstract Expressionism who deeply inspired him such as Zao Wou Ki, Rothko or Richter. Working mainly in oil and mediums created from varnishes and pigments, his very introspective approach highlights the liveliness of the gesture and the strength of the contrasts.

In 2016, deprived of a studio, he had the opportunity to open up to new techniques such as digital creation and then stencil following Street-artists such as Jef Aerosol, Blek le Rat or Miss.Tic.

These techniques then enrich his work and then make the link with his “profane” life as a commercial executive carried out in parallel via more figurative works which question nostalgia and a critical look at the massification of culture.

His creativity is expressed on supports such as canvas, wood but also aluminum panels, most often on large formats.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT :

INJUNCTIONS Collection

Like advertising messages, the plays in this series hammer out contemporary injunctions, often amplified by social networks, and stage their symbols in popular iconography, actors or victims.

PULP Collection

Coming from the popular mass culture, mainly press and tv of my young years and «Pulp» American press from the 30s to present day, my work questions what remains of it, the share of nostalgia, the representations of the relationship between man and woman, the commodification of bodies and the conscious or unconscious impact on our imaginations.

ICONIC Collection

What defines our modern Icons? Why are we able to love them beyond the supposed? Why are we suddenly able to hate them, not for what they are but for what they represent and say about us?

Human and technological icons, I pay tribute to them by creating urban representations, sometimes offbeat.

My work combines painting, drawing, stencil, spray and collage to form a cohesive, energetic, colorful ensemble. He questions the icons of mass culture and the gestures of abstract expressionism while being imbued with urban culture, pop and street.
