BIOGRAPHY
Yann Fredericque has explored texture and imagery for more than twenty-five years. After a brief period at the School of Fine Arts in Nancy, France, he developed a visual language shaped by Abstract Expressionism and the work of Zao Wou-Ki, Mark Rothko, and Gerhard Richter. His practice later expanded to digital art and stencil work, drawing on the street art of Jef Aérosol, Blek le Rat, and Miss.Tic.
He works on canvas, wood, and aluminum, often at a large scale. His work is held in private collections in France.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Some images stay with us long after they disappear from walls and screens. A face from a film, an old advertisement, a few words glimpsed in passing: they return carrying the spirit of an era as well as our own memories. I am drawn to these traces, both those left by time on a surface and those images leave in our minds.
In my urban series, I draw on figures, posters, and slogans from popular culture. In Pulp and Iconic, I revisit familiar images until what we think we recognize begins to shift. In Leave A Message, words return, repeat, and address us. I layer these fragments, sometimes cover them, and allow some to resurface.
My abstract paintings follow a freer path. Color, gesture, transparency, and the unpredictable behavior of materials suggest landscapes or sensations without depicting them. I work in layers, between emergence and erasure. Across these two bodies of work, I return to the same question: what fades, what endures, and what comes back.
